Frequently asked questions
Do pergolas provide real shade?
It depends. A standard open-slat pergola gives you filtered dappled shade — plenty when the sun is low, less at noon. Adjustable-louver aluminum pergolas (Struxure, Renson-style) close fully and give you real full shade or full sky on demand. We build both.
Cedar, vinyl, or aluminum — what's the tradeoff?
Cedar is the classic look — warm, natural, ages beautifully, needs occasional sealing. Vinyl is maintenance-free and cost-effective but has a plainer look. Aluminum louvered systems are the premium modern option — fully adjustable, weather-tight when closed, expensive but transformational.
Attached or freestanding?
Attached pergolas save one row of posts and tie visually into the house — great for a back patio off a living room. Freestanding pergolas are the right call for a pool deck or garden zone where the pergola should feel like its own destination.
Do you need a permit for a pergola?
In most Chester County municipalities, yes — pergolas over a certain size or attached to the house require a permit. We handle it.
